Congratulations on your study place, new QT fuksi (first-year student)!
There are two Telegram groups which we hope all new students join: the Telegram group for QT students starting in 2024, and the Telegram group for all new students of the Guild of Physics (including both QT and Engineering Physics and Mathematics students). In addition, there is a separate Fuksi Captains’ info channel.
Each new student will receive the Guild of Physics Fuksi Guide in August, which contains useful information about the start of the autumn term, your studies, the Guild of Physics, and Teekkari Culture. If you were accepted in 2023 for example, but have taken a gap year e.g. due to military service, then you are also entitled to receive this year’s Fuksi Guide. The Fuksi Guide is available online here. You can also open it by clicking the picture below!
You can contact the Fuksi Captains with any questions regarding your Fuksi year either by Telegram, email, or phone. The Fuksi Captains’ contact details can be found on the left side of this page.
The Guild of Physics programme for orientation week 2024 can be found below. More information about the school’s programme (shown in orange) can be found here. Note that the program is still being updated.
The Guild of Physics and Fuksis
The Guild of Physics is one of the special sub-associations of the Aalto University Student Union (AYY). The Guild organizes a range of free time activities for its members as well as advocates their student rights within the university, takes care of maintaining connections with other students of the same field throughout Finland, and aims to take care of its students’ well-being. All of the Guild’s activities are based on the voluntary work of its members, founded from the good will of teekkari traditions and a spirit of achieving things together.
In the Guild of Physics, fuksis are taken care of by the Fuksi Captains, together with the BIG Coordinator and the BIGs. These people make up the guild’s Fuksi division. On the AYY level, Fuksi upbringing is taken care of by the Fuksi Committee, FTMK, which consists of all Fuksi Captains of Otaniemi. The Fuksi Committee is lead by the Fuksi Major Maria Lappalainen.
Fuksi Captains
The Fuksi Captains are in the Guild to support the fuksis. The Fuksi Captains’ tasks include everything in the Guild that has to do with the first year students. Fuksis meet their Captains on their first day at the university, and the Fuksi Captains accompany the fuksis closely throughout their first year of studies. If fuksis have any questions, they can always contact their Captains. The Fuksi Captains are best reached via Telegram or email, but you can of course also give them a call.
Fuksi Groups and BIGs
The Guild of Physics fuksis are divided into fuksi groups before the beginning of the school year. These groups also include BIGs and student tutors. BIGs are usually second year students and student tutors usually a bit older. The BIGs guide their fuksis through the first days and show them Otaniemi, as well as how things work in Aalto and on campus. Just like with the Fuksi Captains, first year students can also direct any questions they come up with to the BIGs and student tutors. BIGs organise a number of get-togethers and activities throughout the year, in which their own groups and others can get to know each other and spend time together.
Student tutors are there to provide advice for fuksis with a special focus on study related topics. The student tutors have a lot of experience in studying due to their greater academic age and can provide useful guidance on issues related to course choices, course content and workload for example. Student tutors arrange relaxed meetings in which it is possible to talk about the studies. Each fuksi group has also an academic advisor, a member of the teaching staff of Aalto, in addition to their student tutors. Meetings with the academic advisor offer you the opportunity to get to know the teaching staff as well as ask anything about your studies.
Fuksi Points Card
At the beginning of the autumn term, fuksis are given a Fuksi Points Card on which fuksi points collected during the first year are recorded. Fuksis who have collected enough points on their card are entitled to receive their Teekkari cap on the potentially organized Wappu. Points are collected from several categories, which include getting to know the Teekkari Culture, study related events and a range of voluntary activities within the guild or outside, just to mention a few. Filling out the Points Card is a great way to familiarize oneself with everything that Aalto University, AYY, the guilds and Otaniemi have to offer to their students.
The Fuksi Points Cards are handed out during the orientation week on the first day at Kiljava. If a Fuksi is unable to make it to Kiljava, they can get their Points Card from the Fuksi Captains later on request. The points are verified by the Fuksi Captains, and you can always ask the Captains about the points. There is no need to worry too much about getting the points, by joining in and finding something that interests you, you will be sure to have points coming at you from every direction!
