Regulations on Insignia

1 § Guild emblems

The official emblem of the guild is the Greek capital letter phi set in cursive inside a ring. The emblem can be black and white or black and yellow. Additionally, the emblem can include the words “Aalto-yliopisto” on the upper segment of the ring, and “Fyysikkokilta” on the lower segment.

2 § Guild flags

The background color of the official guild flag is white, and its subject is the guild emblem in black and white with a white phi, without text. The ratio of the flag’s width to its height is approximately 8/5. The ratio of the inner height of the phi’s ring to the height of the flag is approximately 18/25. The fly end of the flag has a black fringe. The flag is attached to a pole with a black tassel hanging from its end. The flag is used in dignified events. The decision to use the flag is made by the Board in its meeting. When uncovered, the flag is followed by a guard formed by two teekkaris. The flag bearer and flag guard are appointed by the Board. The flag bearer and the flag guard always wear a teekkari cap. The flag guard wears the Guild’s heraldic sashes.
The Guild also has an unofficial flag that can be used when representing the Guild. Any flag equipped with the Guild emblem that is clearly distinct from the official flag can be used as an unofficial flag.

3 § Standard

The Guild standard has a black and yellow Guild emblem with a black phi on a black background without text. The lower edge of the standard is notched, and it has black tassels.
By decision of the Board, a standard can be donated to long-term affiliates of the Guild. The Board maintains a record of standard recipients.

4 § Guild medals

The Guild has a gold and a silver medal. Of awarded medals only the highest should be worn. The medals are used in the manner of academic badges of honor. Medals are presented during the Guild’s annual ball, if possible. The gold medal can be awarded to one or more Guild members or other individuals for exceptionally laudable efforts toward the Guild’s purposes. A nomination for the gold medal is made by the Board or at least ten Guild members together. Nominations made by Guild members will be addressed when deciding on the awarding of medals. The decision to award a medal is made in a Guild Meeting with five-sixths (⅚) majority of the votes cast. The gold medal is primarily awarded for sustained effort, to an individual who has ended their active career.
The silver medal can be awarded for commendable activities toward the Guild’s purposes to a current or former member of the Guild but not, however, to an honorary member. The silver medal is awarded by the Board with two-thirds (⅔) majority of the cast votes. A maximum of six silver medals can be awarded per year, unless the Board unanimously decides otherwise.
Board members cannot be awarded medals during their term.

5 § Phi accolade

The Phi accolade can be awarded for commendable activities toward the Guild’s purposes. The accolade can be awarded for either sustained activity or exceptionally diligent short-term activity. The Phi accolade can be awarded to a current or former member of the Guild but not, however, to an honorary member.
The accolade cannot be awarded to a recipient of the silver or golden medal nor to Board members during their term.
The awarded accolades are published and presented in the Guild’s half-annual ball, if possible.
The list of awardees is published on the Guild’s web pages, and the Board maintains a record of recipients of the accolade. The Phi accolades are awarded by the Board, who also decide on the content of the accolade for the year.

6 § Guildbook

Honorary members as well as recipients of medals and the Phi accolade are collected in the Guildbook. The Board is responsible for the state and maintenance of the Guildbook.

7 § Board member badge

Members of the Board are entitled to wear a gold-colored phi pin in the manner of academic decorations. They are also entitled to wear a black shoulder mark with a yellow phi in their overalls during their term. The shoulder marks are passed on to new Board members.
After their term, a Board member may claim their Board pin at cost.

8 § Guild ribbon

8.1 § Guild ribbon of the Guild of Physics

The guild ribbon of the Guild of Physics is a black-gold-black ribbon, where the proportions of the colors are 2-5-2. The width of the ribbon is 2 centimeters.
The Guild has a heraldic sash following the same colors and proportions.
The model of the Guild of Physics’ ribbon is stored in the Guild’s archive.

8.2 § Right to wear the Guild ribbon

The right to wear the Guild ribbon is held by all current and former members of the Guild.
The Guild can award the right to wear the Guild ribbon as a tribute to individuals outside the Guild.
The decision to award the right to wear the Guild ribbon as a tribute is made by the Board of the Guild.
The Board maintains a record of individuals to whom the right to wear the Guild ribbon has been awarded as tribute.
The ribbon is not to be given to an individual unauthorized to wear it.

8.3 § Use of the Guild ribbon

The Guild ribbon is worn:

  1. In academic festivities
  2. When representing the Guild of Physics
  3. In other situations where wearing the ribbon is appropriate

The Guild ribbon is worn from the right shoulder down to the left hip.
With a suit, the ribbon can alternatively be worn on the jacket’s left lapel such that it is at a 90 degree angle with respect to the outer edge of the lapel.
The Guild ribbon can also be worn as a rosette. The rosette is worn on the right bodice.
The rosette is to have 2-3 loops on both sides.
Wearing the ribbon necessitates appropriate dress.
When worn, the ribbon must be clean and intact.
The ribbon must not touch bare skin.

9 § President’s chain of office

The sitting President of the Guild is permitted to wear the President’s chain of office during academic festivities in full dress. The chain is handed over to the President at the beginning of their term.

10 § Overalls

As their signature, physicists wear overalls in a color as close as possible to natural white.
In even years, the phi on the back, together with its text, is black on a white background, and in odd years the negative of this. The Guild’s overall patch is to be sewn onto the left breast pocket. Quantum Technology students have otherwise identical overalls, but with a beige-colored left sleeve.

11 § Pro Kiljava

If the number of times an individual has participated in the new students’ welcoming evening is divisible by five, they shall be issued a Pro Kiljava badge at Kiljava.

12 § Titles of distinction

Titles of distinction may be awarded in Guild Meetings. Additionally, the Board may award titles of distinction.
